  21.    This diskette contains drivers and programs for Windows 3.1 users who
  22.    have a Sound Blaster 1.5 or 2.0.
  23.  
  24.    If you obtained the drivers and programs mentioned in this file as a ZIP
  25.    file from a bulletin board, please unzip the contents into a diskette
  26.    labeled

  49. III. Installing the drivers
  50. ---------------------------
  51.  
  52.    1. Start Windows v3.1.
  53.  
  54.    2. Open the Control Panel and select the Drivers icon.
  55.  
  56.    3. You should have the following driver names in the Installed Drivers
  57.       list:
  58.  
  59.             MIDI Mapper
  60.             Timer
  61.             [MCI] MIDI Sequencer
  62.             [MCI] Sound
  63.  
  64.       If you have other drivers installed, please remove them with the
  65.       REMOVE button and restart Windows before continuing.  If any of these
  66.       drivers are not listed, please add them before continuing.  (See your
  67.       Windows manual for details on adding these drivers.)  Make sure you
  68.       restart Windows after making changes to the driver list.
  69.  
  70.    4. Click on the ADD button.
  71.  
  72.    5. Select Unlisted or Updated driver and click on OK.
  73.  
  74.    6. Insert the floppy containing the drivers.
  75.  
  76.    7. Type in the drive letter of the floppy drive containing the driver disk.
  77.  
  78.    WARNING! - The following steps will OVERWRITE your existing MIDIMAP.CFG
  79.               configuration.  If you want to keep your existing
  80.               configuration, click on CANCEL and make a copy of MIDIMAP.CFG
  81.               before continuing the installation process.
  82.  
  83.    8. Select Sound Blaster MIDI Synthesizer and click on OK.
  84.  
  85.    9. Windows will ask if you want to use the current MIDIMAP.CFG or install
  86.       the new MIDIMAP.CFG - Select NEW and continue on.
  87.  
  88.   10. Windows will prompt you for the Sound Blaster I/O address.  The default
  89.       I/O address is 220H.  If you have changed the jumper on your card to
  90.       240H, then select 240H.
  91.  
  92.   11. Windows will ask if you want to restart your system.  Click on
  93.       DON'T RESTART, then repeat steps 4, 5, 6, and 7.
  94.  
  95.   12. Select Sound Blaster v1.5 or Sound Blaster v2.0 Wave and MIDI, depending
  96.       on which card you own (Quick way to tell:  The v2.0 has three 1/8" mini
  97.       jacks - Line In, Mic In, and Audio Out, and the v1.5 only has two 1/8"
  98.       jacks - Mic In and Audio Out).  Make your selection and click on OK.
  99.  
  100.   13. Windows will prompt you for the Sound Blaster I/O address, Interrupt, and
  101.       DMA channel. Choose the settings your card is set to and continue on.
  102.  
  103.   14. Windows will ask if you want to restart your system.  Click on
  104.       RESTART.  Windows will then restart.
  105.  
  106.   15. An additional Windows applications is provided.  The filename is
  107.       MMJBOX.EXE.  Please copy them into your Windows directory.
  108.  
  109. IV. What to do if the drivers don't install correctly
  110. -----------------------------------------------------
  111.  
  112.    If you are having problems installing the drivers, here are some things to
  113.    check before you call Technical Support.  Also, be sure to read the
  114.    "Important Notes" section below.
  115.  
  116. ** 1. If you installed Windows 3.1 using the "Express Installation,"  Windows
  117.       scanned your hard disk for programs to be installed.  As a result, older
  118.       versions of the Jukebox, and Mixer were installed if they were on your
  119.       hard disk at the time of installation.  Please remove these icons.  To do
  120.       this, click on the icon once to select it, then press the delete key.
  121.       Windows will ask you for confirmation.  Repeat for each icon.
  122.  
  123.    2. Check the size and date of all the driver files in the Windows SYSTEM
  124.       directory against the listing in the section "Diskette Contents".  Make
  125.       sure that the correct drivers have been copied to your hard disk.
  126.  
  127.    3. Open the Driver applet in Control panel.  You should at least have the
  128.       following driver names in the Installed Drivers list:
  129.  
  130.             Creative Sound Blaster _MIDI Synthesizer
  131.             Creative Sound Blaster 1.5 Wave and MIDI   ;or 2.0 for SB 2.0 card
  132.             MIDI Mapper
  133.             Timer
  134.             [MCI] MIDI Sequencer
  135.             [MCI] Sound
  136.  
  137.       If one or more of these drivers do not exist, you must install the
  138.       driver(s) using the Driver applet in Control Panel (See the Windows
  139.       manual for more details).
  140.  
  141.    4. Check your SYSTEM.INI by choosing RUN from the File menu of the Program
  142.       Manager, and typing SYSEDIT in the command line box.  Examine the
  143.       [drivers] and [sndblst.drv] sections.  They should look something like
  144.       this:
  145.

  149.               MIDI=sbfm.drv
  150.               Wave=sb15snd.drv    ;Note - a v1.5 card was assumed.  If you
  151.               MIDI1=sb15snd.drv   ;have a v2.0 card, change to sb20snd.drv

  158.    5. If Windows refuses to install a device driver or you get the error
  159.       message "Device not found" when playing a Wave or MIDI file, be sure
  160.       you have the following settings in the [mci] section of SYSTEM.INI
  161.  
  162.               [mci]
  163.               WaveAudio=mciwave.drv
  164.               Sequencer=mciseq.drv
  165.  
  166.       If one or more of these do not exist, you must install the driver(s)
  167.       using the Driver applet in Control Panel (See the Windows manual for
  168.       instructions).  Do not type in the entries into the SYSTEM.INI because
  169.       the files have to be installed into your SYSTEM directory by Windows.

  172. V. If you upgraded from Windows 3.0 to Windows 3.1
  173. --------------------------------------------------
  174.  
  175.    If you upgraded an existing copy of Windows 3.0 or Windows 3.0 with
  176.    Multimedia Extensions to Windows 3.1, here are some special notes to
  177.    consider.
  178.  
  179.    1. If you have a line which reads "device=vsbd.386" in the [386Enh] section
  180.       of SYSTEM.INI, please delete it.  This is an old driver which has been
  181.       replaced by VSBPD.386.  The new driver will not work correctly until this
  182.       line is removed.
  183.  
  184.    2. After installing Windows 3.1, verify that the latest MMJBOX.EXE,
  185.       SBFM.DRV and SB15SND.DRV (or SB20SND.DRV for Sound Blaster 2.0) have been
  186.       copied to your hard disk.  Check the size and date of these files against
  187.       the listing in the section "Diskette Contents".  You can delete any older
  188.       versions that you find in your system.

  191. VI. Important notes
  192. -------------------

  197.    1. The drivers found in the file CREATE.EXE on Microsoft's BBS and in the
  198.       Microsoft Forum on CompuServe are not the latest drivers for Windows 3.1
  199.       and may not work properly.  Please do not use them.
  200.  
  201.    2. The drivers that are included with the Windows 3.1 Resource Kit are not
  202.       the lastest drivers and may not work properly.  Please do not use them.
  203.  
  204.    3. We are including drivers that make use of Device Virtualization.  These
  205.       drivers will allow DOS Apps that use the Sound Blaster to run in Enhanced
  206.       Mode.
  207.  
  208.       Please make sure that a line reading "device=vsbpd.386" exists under the
  209.       [386Enh] section in your SYSTEM.INI.  If you have a line which reads
  210.       "device=vsbd.386", please delete it.  Also, make sure the file VSBPD.386
  211.       is in your Windows SYSTEM directory.  If it is not, copy it from the
  212.       Drivers Disk.
  213.  
  214.    4. The Windows 3.1 drivers can now be used in both Windows 3.0 with
  215.       Multimedia extensions as well as Windows 3.1.  They will check the
  216.       Windows version and use the correct Sound Blaster section name to access
  217.       the settings in the SYSTEM.INI.
  218.  
  219.    5. A MIDI-MAP has been created to make use of the SBFM.DRV, please use the
  220.       MIDI MAPPER icon under Control Panel to customize it to your requirements.
  221.  
  222.       Under Windows 3.1, MIDI channel 10 is referenced as the drum channel.
  223.       If you are having problems with the FM synth not sounding "right", try
  224.       modifying the configuration with the MIDI Mapper.
  225.
